Math Challenge: April 13-17Time!!!!
We know that there are 60 seconds in one minute. I want you to find out how many seconds are in 5 minutes. 10 minutes. 1 hour. 1 day. Remember this is a challenge. I don't want you to use a calculator, but I do realize that we don't know how to do all of the math with this (double digit multiplied by double digit) and we don't need to know how to do that. We can multiply some of the single digit numbers by a multiply digit number and we can add some of those numbers to solve this challenge. It may take a little bit of work, but I'm interested in how you do the problem, not the answer. So please show me your work, I'm not worried about the correct answer as much as I am about the ways you tried to do it. Once you get an answer please email it to me. I'm going to post pictures on Friday afternoon. Good luck! Time is on your side! Penny Collection
This activity is from youcubed.com https://www.youcubed.org/tasks/penny-collection/ This activity allows students to explore how numbers are composed, by having them look at different ways of grouping them. There are many different strategies and methods students can use to come up with a solution. Students can use actual pennies, draw diagrams, and use charts to keep track of their findings. As students explore they will notice many different patterns in the numbers they are exploring. Task InstructionsConsider a collection of pennies with the following constraints: When the pennies are put in groups of 2 there is one penny left over. When they are put in groups of three, five and six there is also one penny left over. But when they are put in groups of seven there are no pennies left over. How many pennies could there be? |
